Hip pain and replacement: understand your options

Hip pain can make a short walk, a flight of stairs or putting on footwear feel difficult. At AIIMS Sanjivani Hospital, Dr. Kuldeep Singh assesses the cause, explains what treatment may help, and performs hip replacements himself when surgery is appropriate. A consultation is a chance to ask questions, not a decision to operate.

Start with an assessment

When should you ask about hip pain?

Book an assessment if pain in the hip, groin or thigh keeps returning, you have begun to limp, walking your usual distance has become harder, or simple movements such as putting on footwear are limited.

After a fall or injury, if you cannot stand or put weight on the leg, seek urgent medical care rather than waiting for a routine OPD visit.

What happens at the appointment?

Dr. Singh will ask where the pain is, how it affects daily life and what you have already tried. He may examine how the hip moves and review previous X-rays or scans. Further imaging may be advised if needed.

Bring existing reports and a list of medicines you take.

Your choices

Does hip pain always mean replacement?

No. The cause, severity, examination, imaging, health and goals all matter. Non-surgical care may be considered first. If joint damage and symptoms continue to limit daily life, Dr. Singh can explain whether hip replacement is a reasonable option, including its risks and alternatives.

If surgery is discussed

What should I ask before deciding?

Ask what the operation would involve in your case, what preparation and hospital care you need, and how physiotherapy and follow-up are planned. Recovery differs from person to person; a discussion should set expectations without promising a fixed result.
